Fall Garden Planning (and a Giveaway)

It’s finally here! Have you been waiting for summer to end like me? Here in Florida, there’s only a handful of items we can grow during the summer. It’s so hot and I long for fall so I can start planting again. I just planted a few rows of green beans and speckled butter beans a few weeks ago and they are popping up nicely.

I’ve been gardening for years and every year, it’s always a trial and error. If something goes wrong one season, I just learn from it and try again the next season. Do you ever have those “so close to amazing” moments in the garden? Ok, I’m the only one LOL? Continue reading

Under cooked Cornbread and new friends

I’ll never forget the time that we moved to our cute little town in the country. It was 2006. I loved this place! But I was missing something. My husband worked all day and I spent time with my two kids. Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time playing and learning all kinds of fun things. Something was missing. I needed people other than the four of us, like friends. I was new here and didn’t know a soul.

About a year after we moved here, I got settled and got the nerve to go to our local community club for their annual meeting and potluck. I was so excited that I got to cook for someone other than my family and maybe I might see a friendly face there. I started my cornbread around 5:30 and made it just as usual.  Because I wasn’t sure how large of a crowd there was going to be, I cooked it in a 9×13 tin foil pan and figured I’d cut it into squares. After preparing it, I put it in the oven and let it cook like normal time, pulled it out and wrapped it in foil.

When we got to the club, I was so nervous and when we got out, everyone said hi to us and I thought to myself, “This is going to be such a fun place.” We went in and introduced ourselves and grabbed a seat at one of the tables. The president then called everyone into the kitchen so we could say the blessing and dig in. A real nice lady had taken my cornbread to the kitchen so she could cut them into squares to make it easier for people to grab.

I was so excited for everyone to taste my cornbread. I wondered if people ate it like we did. I was in line to fix our plate, and that same nice lady came out and told me my cornbread wasn’t done. “What do you mean it wasn’t done?” I asked her. I cooked it just like normal. But, wait a minute…..I just remembered I doubled the recipe and forgot to double the time to cook it. Really? How could I forget that. It was supposed to be amazing or so I thought. The lady was so sweet and just laughed and said, “It happens.”

So, needless to say, no one really got to taste my amazing cornbread but I did end up walking out of there with a few friends that night.

Let’s fast forward to today…..I have some of the most amazing friends now and I owe it all to God for nudging me to go to a meeting at the club. I love this little club I am a member of. I served as treasurer for three years and as a board member.

So, here is my update for Chapter 8 this week in KariAnne Wood’s new book “So Close to Amazing”. Just like me, KariAnne wanted to make friends and joined a garden club and brought an under-cooked roast to the meeting. Can you imagine the laughs at her meeting too?? I can’t wait for you to read the rest of the chapter when the book comes out.

Something I’ve Always Wanted to Do

There is just something about hand-forged iron.  I mean anything that’s made from it just makes me think of civil war era.  I absolutely love anything that’s been hand-forged.  Well, I have to tell you, I was so excited when I found this cute little store, Em’z Outdoor Store on one of my country rides going to St. Augustine.  It really is a cute store.  They sell gorgeous plants, offer amazing classes and have a barn that’s a store inside.  You have to check them out!

Ok, back to Blacksmithing.  I’m not sure if that’s a word, but that is what I was doing a few weeks ago.  I learned how to Blacksmith.  I’m still blown away that I made this cute hook.  I even twisted the iron all by myself, along with the help of the instructor LOL.  No, but seriously, I made this hook and learned so much.  I want to do it again!

They are supposed to be holding a class on how to make a knife and I am so there.  Now that my family saw what I made, they all want to come next time with me LOL.

Disappointed about Burt’s Bees and the Winner of my Lip Butter Giveaway!

When I found out that Clorox (yes, you heard me, Clorox) had acquired the humble Burt’s Bees company I was really disappointed.  Now, it’s 2014 and I’m just hearing that Clorox purchased them back in 2007. I’ve been using their trusted product for years and never knew this until recently.

You can read about the purchase HERE.

The story of Burt is a charming one gone bad. Burt Shavitz, a beekeeper in Dexter, Maine, lived an extremely humble life selling honey in pickle jars from the back of his pickup truck and resided in the wilderness inside a turkey coop without running water or electricity.

In the summer of 1984, Shavitz was driving down the road and spotted a hitchhiker who needed a lift to the post office. He pulled over and picked up Roxanne Quimby, a 34-year-old woman who eventually became Shavitz’s lover and business partner. Quimby started helping him tend to the beehives, and that eventually led to the all natural-inspired health care products made with Shavitz’s honey and the birth of Burt’s Bees products.

Burt’s story and very powerful narrative gave Burt’s Bees products their legitimacy in my book. Creative entrepreneurs and knowledgeable consumers together working their magic; not the results of a corporate behemoth out to dominate the marketplace.

However, Quimby and Shavitz’s relationship became ‘sticky’ in the late ’90s for reasons unclear, yet probably having little to do with honey. Their romantic break up carried over to the split of their business partnership as well. In 1999, Quimby bought out Shavitz’s shares of the company for a small six-figure sum. Quimby then continued, becoming phenomenally successfully and growing sales to $43.5 million by 2002.

In 2003, a private equity firm, AEA investors, purchased 80 percent of Burt’s Bees from Quimby, with her retaining a 20 percent share and a seat on the board. In 2006, John Replogle, the former general manager of Unilever’s skin-care division became CEO and president of Burt’s Bees. The company was sold to Clorox in late October 2007 for $925 million.

Quimby was paid more than $300 million for her stake in Burt’s Bees. At the time of that deal, Shavitz reportedly demanded more money, and Quimby agreed to pay him $4 million. Quimby now refurbishes fancy, swank homes in Florida, travels the world and buys massive chunks of land in her free time. Our bearded man Shavitz, on the other hand, now 73 and unchanged, continues to reside amidst nature in his now-expanded turkey coop, which still remains absent of electricity or running water.

The Burt’s Bees story is disconcerting. I vaguely remembered long ago that one of my favorite ice cream products, Ben & Jerry’s, sold out. Unilever (which also owns Breyers), the giant conglomerate with an estimated market cap of $50 billion and close to 174,000 employees, bought Ben & Jerry’s in 2000 for $326 million.

This is where I started researching on how to make my own lip balm.  Well, I actually call it “Lip Butter”. I promise to everyone that I will never ever sell to a big company if by chance someone would approach me. LOL, seriously, NEVER!

My products that I make are created with everyone in mind.  There are no hidden products and I will never say the word NATURAL.  That word can mean a lot of things.  They are honest and real products that I use and I only purchase my products from the best companies.

Here’s my post on my recipe for lip butter and where I buy all of my goodies. 🙂

Now, ONWARD we go……

Is it driving you crazy to know who won the three pack of lip butters?
